Point of Sale (POS) Glossary
Non-taxable sales are transactions where no sales tax is collected. Some sales are exempt from any sales tax. The rules vary from state to state. Many states do not charge full tax for grocery store purchases but charge full tax for restaurant food because it is prepared and considered the purchase of a service versus essential food.
There is a lot of variability in sales tax. If someone is purchasing for resale, they may be exempt from paying sales tax. Sales tax amounts can be different across a state, as there is a state tax, and then local regions may have differing additional sales tax.
A point of sale system can be programmed for sales tax exemptions. Additionally, POS reporting can also give a merchant all the details they need to correctly account for these exceptions when reporting the tax they collected.
