Point of Sale (POS) Glossary
Exception Reporting in Point of Sale systems is a record of all transactions in a period that fall outside of normal transaction parameters. Point of sale exceptions might include staff purchases, voids, coupons, over/under rings, drawers open with no sale, and suspended transactions. Any abnormal transactions can be included. This reporting would exclude normally completed transactions, which could be viewed in other analytics.
Exception Reporting can usually be defined in a POS system to show those transactions that are out of the ordinary and may indicate customer or employee fraud. It is crucial to leverage POS analytics such as Exception Reporting to discover any anomalies so that management can investigate them to determine if problems require interventions such as staff or procedural changes.
